Height and Outer Body Diameter Variance in 330ml, 355ml, and 500ml Aluminum Cans

1. Why Height and Diameter Variance Matters on the Line

We see the same mistake every quarter: a buyer orders 330ml Standard and 355ml Sleek for the same filling line, assuming the shared 202 neck means everything else fits. It does not. The body diameter and height drive the changeover, not the neck.

Our 3104-H19 can bodies are drawn and ironed to the dimensions in the table below. When your line runs within these tolerances, seaming stays clean. When it does not, you get tipped cans on the conveyor, flange wrinkling, or inconsistent seam thickness.

2. Standard vs Sleek Dimensions by Volume

These are the production dimensions we hold for export orders. All five variants use a 202 neck and 3104-H19 alloy.

3. What Changes on the Filling Line

Do not confuse the neck with the body. All five variants below use a 202 neck, so the same seamer chuck nose works for the seam itself. What changes is the handling hardware around the can.

Line changeover rules for 330ml/355ml/500ml cans Standard 66.04mm family (330ml / 355ml / 500ml) | +→ Same volume family, different height → adjust filler valve stroke and seamer height only | +→ Switch to Sleek 57.40mm → swap starwheels and guide rails

Within the Standard family, moving from 330ml to 500ml is a height adjustment. Moving from Standard to Sleek is a width change. Plan for the second one before you sign a mixed-format contract.

4. Internal Coatings by Destination

The can volume does not change the coating chemistry, but the destination does. We run two systems depending on the market:

BPA-NI (BPA Non-Intent)Water-based internal polymer coat for North America, the EU, and the UK. Ships with migration-test reports.
Epoxy-PhenolicCost-optimized option for markets where it is still permitted, such as Russia and Ghana. Stable for carbonated and neutral beverages.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Can a 330ml Standard and a 500ml Standard run on the same conveyor?

Yes. Both use a 66.04mm body diameter, so the same guide rails and starwheels work. You only adjust the vertical height of the filler valves and seamer chuck to cover 115.19mm vs 167.84mm.

What is the height difference between 355ml Standard and 355ml Sleek?

355ml Standard is 122.22mm tall with a 66.04mm diameter. 355ml Sleek is 155.73mm tall with a 57.40mm diameter. Both use a 202 neck, but the Sleek needs its own starwheels and guide rails.

Why do Sleek cans hold the same volume with a smaller diameter?

They are taller. A narrower body with extra height gives the same internal volume. The trade-off is a slimmer hand-feel and more shelf facings per meter.

6. Need Samples for Line Verification?

If you are planning a mixed-format run, test the change parts before you commit to a full container. We can ship a combined kit with 330ml Standard, 355ml Standard, 500ml Standard, and 355ml Sleek samples, each with its dimensional report and matching 202 end.
