16 oz Aluminum Can Dimensions: Structural Metrics for the North American Craft Beer Sector

June 25, 2026  |  Technical  |  7 min read

Seaming micro-leaks, flange cracks, and line stoppages are common when craft breweries switch to a new 16 oz (473ml) can supplier. On a North American high-speed canning line, a 0.2 mm profile variance can jam the seamer or reverse the bottom dome under 2.5–3.0 volumes of CO₂.

Alucan supplies 16 oz standard cans held to tight tolerances with BPANI food-contact linings, so they drop onto standard Angelus and Ferrum seamers without re-tooling.

1. 16 oz aluminum can dimensions

These are the dimensions and tolerances we hold on every 16 oz standard can shipment.

DimensionMetricWhy it matters
Nominal volume16 oz / 473 mlNorth American craft-beer standard
Total height157.22 mm ± 0.20 mmSets filler height and tray nesting
Body diameter66.04 mm ± 0.10 mmSets guide rails and puck spacing
Neck diameter52.30 mm (202 end)Runs on 202 SOT, CDL, B64 ends
Flange width2.10 mm ± 0.15 mmControls double-seam seal
Dome depth24.13 mmKeeps can stable on conveyors
Internal pressure≥ 6.1 bar (90 PSI)Handles pasteurization and carbonation

2. Filling performance and compliance for craft beer

Importing 16 oz cans into North America means matching both structural and chemical requirements for acidic craft beverages.

Online flange inspection

Even small flange distortions cause sharp seams or split flanges. We run online laser scanning on the line and hold flange width to ±0.15 mm before pallets leave the plant.

BPANI internal lining

North American regulations require BPA-non-intent food-contact coatings. We apply BPANI liners inside every 16 oz standard can to keep acidic beer from reacting with the aluminum, preserving flavor and shelf life.

Quality note: Wall thickness uniformity matters for micro-fracture resistance. We verify this with online laser vision inspection on every production lot, backed by ISO 9001 and FDA-compliant food-contact documentation.

3. Frequently asked questions

Will Alucan’s 16 oz cans fit standard 202 SOT and CDL lids?

Yes. The neck is 52.30 mm to the 202 spec, so our 16 oz cans run on standard 202 SOT, B64, and CDL ends without seamer modification.

What coating is used for craft beer?

BPANI (BPA Non-Intent) polymer lining is standard for North American craft beer. We can also supply Epoxy-Phenolic for non-regulated markets on request.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Standard MOQ is one 40'HQ container per SKU. For new brands or pilot launches, we can send smaller sample batches and mixed-size testing kits for line verification before you commit to a full container.

Can 16 oz cans be used for drinks other than craft beer?

Yes. Hard cider, RTD cocktails, craft seltzer, sparkling water, and kombucha all use the 16 oz format. The 66.04 mm body and 202 neck fit standard seaming equipment across categories.
